Konkan: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the Konkan-Goa coast and an orange alert for Mumbai, warning residents and authorities of extremely heavy rainfall and gusty winds expected over the weekend. The alert follows the formation of a persistent low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea, which coincides with the onset of the south-west monsoon.
Issued on Thursday, the red alert advises citizens in Maharashtra and Goa to prepare for potential disruptions. According to the IMD, wind speeds may reach up to 65 kmph, potentially causing damage to infrastructure, including power lines and communication networks. The advisory also warns of risks to agricultural land, livestock in open areas, and localized flooding in low-lying regions.
Despite widespread speculation about a developing cyclone—referred to in some circles as Cyclone Shakti—IMD officials have debunked any cyclone formation at this time. However, the intensity of the monsoon-triggered system is sufficient to warrant vigilance and preparedness, particularly across the western coast.
Local authorities have been urged to implement preventive safety measures, and fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea. Commuters in Mumbai and surrounding areas should expect waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and possible delays in public transport services due to the weather.
The IMD continues to monitor the evolving weather pattern closely and is providing frequent updates to keep residents informed. Citizens are encouraged to stay tuned to official channels for timely weather warnings and follow safety guidelines to minimize risk during this period of severe weather activity.
